Toyota has just dropped a bombshell in the automotive world with the launch of its first-ever Century SUV Convertible. The revelation occurred at the Grand Sumo Tournament in Japan, turning heads and challenging the typical SUV look.
The Grand Sumo Tournament in full swing, and there it is—the Century SUV Convertible, stealing the show outside Tokyo’s Ryogoku Kokugikan Arena. Akio Toyoda, Toyota’s Chairman, proudly presented the convertible alongside Sumo bigwigs Yamayasu Shibata and Sho Miyagino.
A Sumo’s Dream Ride
This jaw-dropping ride wasn’t a random idea; it was specifically requested by a retired sumo wrestler. He wanted a parade car for future sumo champions, turning down Toyota’s initial offer of a modified Toyota Crown in favor of the Century.
The convertible stunt showcased its surprising ability to fit two sumo wrestlers comfortably—a far cry from its usual SUV appearance.

Toyota didn’t just chop off the roof; they reinforced the body to keep it steady, adding a bit of weight. To balance things out, they tweaked the suspension, ensuring a smooth ride.
The car maintains its classy look—white exterior, ivory interior, and fancy alloy wheels. Inside, the cabin got a makeover too. They ditched the rear seats, replacing them with a raised bench for sumo champions to wave at the crowd during parades. It’s roomy enough to fit not just champions but a bunch of athletes.
Despite the fancy changes, Toyota kept the engine untouched—a 3.5-liter V6 in a plug-in hybrid setup. With 406 horsepower and all-wheel drive, it promises power without compromising efficiency.
Now, here’s the catch. The Century SUV is already Toyota’s priciest model at around $170,000 in Japan, and that’s before any add-ons. Toyota hasn’t spilled the beans on the cost of this Sumo-inspired version yet, leaving us all curious.
