A terrible accident in the German town of Schwerte has left a family broken and renewed concerns about Tesla’s car safety. A 43-year-old man and two nine-year-old children were killed when their Tesla suddenly left the road, hit a tree, and burst into flames. Another child, also nine years old, managed to escape and was flown to hospital with serious injuries.
Witnesses say the crash happened when the Tesla tried to overtake several cars but then, for reasons still unknown, swerved off the road and went into a ditch before smashing into a tree. Within seconds the car caught fire. Flames and smoke filled the area, and people nearby rushed to try and help.
One local businessman, told Ruhr News that he tried everything to save the passengers. “I wanted to rescue some people,” he said. “I tried to open the car, but it didn’t work. It was already so hot from the fire, but the right side of the car was still relatively undamaged. I thought maybe I could help, but it didn’t work.”
Police spokesman also described the horror of the scene. “Tragically, the Tesla caught fire there, and three people inside the vehicle were burned to death. Among them were two children and an adult man.”
Firefighters arrived quickly, but they struggled to put out the flames. Reports say the fire flared up again several times even after it was extinguished. Emergency helicopters and multiple ambulances were called, and the injured child was taken to a nearby hospital.
It is still not clear how that child was able to escape the burning car — whether they managed to open the door themselves or if rescuers pulled them out.
The police in North Rhine-Westphalia have opened an investigation. They want to know why the Tesla suddenly left the road and whether the car’s systems or design may have played a role in the tragedy.
The crash has again raised concerns about Tesla’s doors and safety features. Unlike many cars, Teslas do not have traditional door handles. They use electronic buttons to open, and when power is lost after a crash, those buttons often stop working.
There is a manual release inside the car, but experts say it is not easy to find in a high-stress moment, especially for children. Germany’s largest automobile association, ADAC, warned in 2024 that these door systems could be dangerous in an emergency.
This is not the first time such a tragedy has been linked to Tesla vehicles. In Toronto last year, four young people died when their Tesla hit a guardrail, caught fire, and trapped them inside.
Tesla has said it will redesign its doors to make them safer in emergencies, but many critics argue these changes are coming too late. For families who have already lost loved ones, the promise of future improvements offers little comfort.
The accident has triggered strong emotions online. People expressed sorrow for the victims but also anger at Tesla. “If kids cannot get out of a car fire, something is wrong,” one user wrote on X, formerly Twitter. Others said the tragedy should push regulators to take stronger action against unsafe designs in electric vehicles.
Tesla has not yet made an official comment about the Schwerte crash. Police are still gathering evidence and have not released the identities of the victims. They are speaking to witnesses, analyzing the car’s systems, and checking if any form of driver assistance technology was in use at the time of the crash. The investigation is expected to take several weeks.
