China is making artificial intelligence (AI) a compulsory subject for children starting at age 6. From September 1, 2025, AI education will become mandatory for children as young as six, marking a major shift in early learning systems.
Schools across the country will begin teaching AI education as part of their standard curriculum. By starting AI education early, the country hopes to prepare the next generation for a future where technology will play an even greater role in daily life, jobs, and society.
In Beijing, officials have confirmed that every school must now provide at least eight hours of AI lessons each academic year. These lessons may be separate courses or combined with subjects such as science and technology. This structured AI education approach ensures consistency across schools.
Children in elementary school, between the ages of six and twelve, will be introduced to AI education through simple, hands-on activities. Middle school students will focus on applying AI in their schoolwork and daily life, while high school students will dive deeper into advanced AI applications and innovation.
“This is not just about teaching coding or computer use,” a representative from the Beijing Municipal Education Commission explained. “It is about helping children think differently, use AI responsibly, and prepare for a world where AI will be everywhere.” This vision places AI education at the center of modern learning.

The initiative also introduces what is being called the “teacher-student-machine” learning model. In this model, artificial intelligence tools will not only help students but also support teachers, making classrooms more interactive. At the same time, children will learn about AI ethics, ensuring they understand both the benefits and the responsibilities of using technology through structured AI education.
The announcement has mixed reactions from parents and teachers. Some parents welcome the decision, believing AI education will give their children an advantage in the digital economy. “My daughter is only seven, but she already knows how to use apps and smart devices,” said Li Mei, a parent from Beijing.
Teachers also see opportunities. “It will be a challenge to adapt, but this is necessary,” said a middle school teacher. “We cannot ignore that AI is becoming a part of every job. Our students must learn how to use it, not fear it.” Many educators believe AI education will reshape classroom learning.

China is not the only country focusing on AI education, but it is moving faster than most. California in the United States has already passed a law requiring schools to consider AI literacy. Italy has begun testing AI-powered tools in classrooms. South Korea is training all teachers to use AI and has already launched AI digital textbooks in subjects like English and math.
Experts warn that the United States risks falling behind. According to Fortune, more than 250 CEOs, including Microsoft’s Satya Nadella and Uber’s Dara Khosrowshahi, signed a letter urging U.S. lawmakers to make computer science and AI education mandatory.
“In the age of AI, we must prepare our children to be AI creators, not just consumers,” the letter said. “Without this, we risk losing competitiveness and leaving our children unprepared for the future.”
Currently, only 12 states in the U.S. require computer science as part of graduation, and just 6.4% of high school students are enrolled in such courses. OpenAI’s Sam Altman recently said, “The obvious thing today is to get really good at using AI tools. That is the skill every student must learn.” This further highlights the global push toward AI education.
Parents in China are already preparing their children for this new requirement. Schools, too, are updating their teaching materials and training teachers. “This is about giving our children the tools they need to survive and succeed,” said a Beijing school principal. “In the same way that we once taught every child how to read and write, we will now teach them how to understand and use AI.” AI education is now becoming a foundation of future learning.
