Chinese automaker BYD has unveiled its newest plug-in hybrid station wagon, the Seal 06 DM-i, in China. Starting at just $15,230 (109,800 yuan), this family-friendly car brings together hybrid technology, impressive driving range, and plenty of practical features. BYD says it plans to take the car global, with Europe being a key target market.
While station wagons have not been very popular in China, BYD believes that new energy vehicles like this could change consumer preferences. As SUVs dominate local sales, the Seal 06 DM-i wagon offers a more aerodynamic design and slightly better fuel efficiency while still providing the spaciousness that families need.
The Seal 06 DM-i is built using BYD’s fifth-generation plug-in hybrid technology. The car’s total driving range is a staggering 1,243 miles when the gas engine and electric motor work together. Even in electric mode alone, the vehicle can travel up to 93 miles in its higher variant.
Speaking at the launch, a BYD spokesperson said, “We designed the Seal 06 DM-i to meet the needs of modern families. It’s efficient, practical, and affordable. As the world moves toward cleaner transportation, we believe this station wagon can find its place in both China and overseas markets.”
In China, buyers can choose from two powertrain options. The base model comes with a 1.5-liter engine paired with a 161-horsepower electric motor, delivering an electric-only range of 50 miles and a fuel efficiency of 74.7 miles per gallon. It accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 8.7 seconds.

For drivers seeking more power, the top variant combines the same 1.5-liter engine with a stronger 215-horsepower electric motor and a larger battery, which extends the electric-only range to 93 miles. This version sprints from 0 to 60 mph in just 7.7 seconds. The battery can charge from 30% to 80% in about 25 minutes, making it convenient for city and long-distance travel.
BYD showed the Seal 06 DM-i’s practicality as one of its main attractions. With a trunk capacity of 670 liters, it can easily handle luggage for long family trips. When the rear seats are folded, the space increases to 1,535 liters, enough for larger items or outdoor gear.
The car also features Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability, which allows it to power electronic devices directly from its battery. This is especially useful for camping trips or emergencies.
The exterior carries BYD’s signature “Marine Aesthetics” design language. Its smooth lines, hidden door handles, and sleek LED headlights give it a modern, upscale look. At 4,850 mm long with a 2,790 mm wheelbase, it’s slightly larger than most European wagons, offering extra cabin space for passengers.

Technology is a major focus for the Seal 06 DM-i. Even the base model includes a 12.8-inch infotainment display, an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster, six airbags, and heated and ventilated front seats.
The car also comes equipped with BYD’s DiPilot 100 driver assistance system, nicknamed “God’s Eye C.” With 12 cameras, five millimeter-wave radars, and 12 ultrasonic sensors, the system can manage semi-autonomous driving on highways. The “100” refers to its computing power of 100 trillion operations per second (TOPS).
For buyers who opt for the top-tier variant, there’s an even larger 15.6-inch screen, eight speakers, and BYD’s DiSus-C damping system, which enhances ride comfort using solenoid valves.
In China, the Seal 06 DM-i is available in three trims. The entry-level version starts at $15,230, while the mid-tier and flagship models are priced at $16,720 and $18,115, respectively. BYD believes these prices make the wagon an attractive option not only for Chinese families but also for buyers in Europe and beyond.
A company insider reportedly told CarNewsChina, “We’re confident the Seal 06 DM-i will appeal to European customers looking for eco-friendly family cars. Its design, range, and features align with the expectations of a global market.”
