Chinese automaker IM Motors has launched the IM L6 sedan featuring an innovative semi-solid-state battery technology. This move marks a significant leap forward in EV battery design and performance.
IM Motors, a joint venture between SAIC and Alibaba, has unveiled the IM L6 with its flagship Lightyear Max variant equipped with a cutting-edge semi-solid-state battery. The Lightyear battery, named after the car model, boasts impressive specifications, including a capacity of 130 kWh and an extraordinary range of 621 miles (1000 kilometers) based on Chinese CLTC standards.
Semi-Solid-State Battery Technology
Unlike traditional solid-state batteries, which use solid electrolytes exclusively, the Lightyear battery adopts a semi-solid layout, incorporating solid material suspended within a liquid electrolyte. This unique approach enhances performance while addressing key challenges such as power density, fast-charging capabilities, cost, durability, and cycle life.
“Over 1,000 kilometres of range + quasi 900 V ultra-fast charging will completely solve the mileage anxiety of pure electric vehicles,” Liu Tao, Co-CEO of IM Motors, wrote on Weibo.

The IM L6 is not just about its revolutionary battery technology. It also showcases cutting-edge vehicle performance and features designed to appeal to both enthusiasts and practical car buyers. The sedan offers two specifications: all-wheel drive, boasting a maximum power of 787 PS, and single-motor configurations with outputs ranging from 293 PS to 408 PS.
Underpinning the IM L6 is a state-of-the-art digital chassis featuring multi-system Vehicle Motion Control. This technology integrates four-wheel steering, intelligent electronic damping, air suspension, and other essential components. These innovations enable remarkable maneuvers such as crab walking around tight corners and diagonal sliding into parking spaces, setting a new standard for driving dynamics in the EV segment.
Inside the IM L6, passengers are treated to a sophisticated infotainment system with two sizable monitors serving as the interface for instrumentation and entertainment components. The sedan features advanced components like the Nvidia Orin processor, merging infotainment and driving dynamics seamlessly.
The IM L6 comes in three variants catering to different price points and consumer preferences. The entry-level Standard Max is priced below 230,000 yuan ($31,800), while the top-of-the-line Lightyear Max, featuring a semi-solid-state battery, is available at 330,000 yuan ($45,640). Pre-sales have already begun, with the sedan set to hit the Chinese market in May.
