Rolls-Royce had unveiled the all-new second-generation Ghost luxury sedan, setting a new standard in automotive refinement and tranquility. Launched almost three years after its predecessor, this remarkable vehicle promises to be one of the quietest combustion engine cars ever created.
During its development, Rolls-Royce engineers went to great lengths to eliminate outside noise, adding 220 pounds of sound-deadening materials strategically throughout the car. They even lined the tyres with lightweight acoustic insulation foam. However, this quest for absolute silence posed a unique challenge.
Bloomberg learned from Rolls-Royce chief engineer Jon Simms that during early testing in the car’s five-year development period, the car was so quiet it caused those people to become disoriented, “bordering on nausea.”
Early prototypes of the Ghost were so eerily quiet that occupants felt disoriented. Test drivers reported sensations bordering on nausea because the silence inside the cabin did not match the car’s movement.
To address this issue, Rolls-Royce’s sound engineers didn’t simply add noise; they orchestrated a harmonious blend of sounds within the cabin. Rear seat frames and trunk components were tuned to vibrate at specific frequencies, producing a continuous soft whisper. The massive 6.75-litre twin-turbo V12 engine was carefully calibrated to emit a pleasing sound, ensuring a serene driving experience.

“We found that these clients are showing a marked tendency towards luxury objects that celebrate reduction and restraint – that don’t shout, but rather, whisper,” Rolls-Royce CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös said in a letter to customers and the media.

Underneath its elegant exterior, the Ghost boasts cutting-edge engineering. Its aluminium construction reduces weight while enhancing structural integrity. Combined with over 200 pounds of sound-absorbing materials, the result is a nearly silent interior ambience.
