The Chinese electric vehicle company BYD is getting ready to launch its new flagship SUV, the BYD Great Tang, in China this May. This new model is expected to attract strong attention in the electric vehicle market because of its very long range, fast charging system, and premium features. The BYD Great Tang will be available in both fully electric (BEV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) versions, giving buyers more options based on their needs, as reported by CarNewsChina.

  • BYD Great Tang Range and Battery Technology
  • BYD Great Tang Performance

The BYD Great Tang is based on the Dynasty-D concept that was first shown at the Shanghai Auto Show 2025. The concept has now become a production model with many real-world features. The SUV serves as a full-size family vehicle with seven seats, making it suitable for large families and long trips. It also stands as the largest SUV BYD has ever built, reflecting the company’s strong push into the premium electric SUV segment.

BYD Great Tang Range and Battery Technology

BYD Great Tang’s impressive feature is the driving range. The fully electric version delivers up to 950 km on a single charge under CLTC standards, placing it among the longest-range electric SUVs in the world. The vehicle uses BYD’s second-generation Blade Battery, which offers high safety and efficiency. This battery technology allows the SUV to travel longer distances without frequent charging.

Another important feature is the flash charging technology. This system significantly reduces charging time, allowing drivers to quickly recharge the battery and get back on the road. This is especially useful for people who travel long distances and do not want to spend too much time waiting at charging stations. With both long-range and fast charging, the BYD Great Tang is designed for convenience and everyday use.

BYD Great Tang Performance

In terms of performance, the BYD Great Tang offers powerful options. The rear-wheel-drive version comes with a 300 kW electric motor, providing smooth and efficient driving. For those who want more power, the all-wheel-drive version delivers a combined output of 585 kW. This version can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.9 seconds, making it very fast for a large SUV. Even with this high performance, it still offers a strong range of up to 850 km, balancing speed and efficiency.

The SUV will also come in plug-in hybrid versions. The DM-i version uses a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine combined with an electric motor. This setup focuses on fuel efficiency and offers an electric-only range of over 300 km, which is enough for daily driving without using fuel. The DM-p version is more performance-focused, combining the same engine with dual electric motors. This version produces higher power and includes all-wheel-drive capability for better traction and acceleration.

Inside the cabin, the BYD Great Tang offers a premium experience. The interior includes multiple digital screens, a large rear-seat display, folding tables, and even a built-in refrigerator. The SUV also comes with a 27-speaker sound system, providing a high-quality audio experience. These features make the vehicle comfortable for both drivers and passengers, especially on long journeys.

The driving experience is further improved with advanced technologies. The SUV features BYD’s DiSus-A suspension system with dual-chamber air springs, which helps provide a smooth and stable ride. Rear-wheel steering is another key feature, allowing the vehicle to turn more easily despite its large size. This gives the BYD Great Tang a smaller turning radius, making it easier to drive in cities and tight spaces.

The BYD Great Tang is expected to compete directly with the Geely Galaxy M9. The Galaxy M9 has already gained strong popularity in China, showing that demand for large SUVs is growing quickly. BYD aims to capture this market by offering a better range, advanced features, and competitive pricing.

Although BYD has not yet announced the official price, reports suggest it may position the Great Tang below its premium Denza models. This strategy will help avoid internal competition while making the SUV more affordable for a wider range of buyers.

The BYD Great Tang will enter presales in April, with its official launch planned for May. Both electric and hybrid versions have already applied for sales approval in China, which means the launch is very close.
