The South Korean tech giant Samsung is gearing up for a significant announcement at its upcoming Developer Conference scheduled for October 5, 2023. According to the Korea Economic Daily reports, Samsung will introduce its cloud gaming service, seamlessly integrated into the Samsung Game Launcher on Galaxy phones and tablets. This innovative approach is set to reshape the landscape of mobile gaming and could provide a solution to the challenges faced by game publishers in recent years.
Unlike traditional cloud gaming platforms, which predominantly focus on console and PC gaming, Samsung’s cloud gaming service targets the lucrative mobile gaming market. The service has been quietly expanding in beta for a few months, with seven games from Playrix and Snow Print Studios already included in the lineup.

Samsung’s decision to embrace cloud gaming for mobile games is seen as a strategic move to diversify its revenue streams amid a challenging year for smartphone sales. The company aims to capitalize on its existing hardware in users’ hands and offset declining revenues through advertising and paid game streaming.
Jong Hyuk Woo, Vice President of Games Services for Samsung Electronics (USA), told VentureBeat ,that “90% of the people who have expressed interest in a game publisher’s content, via an ad, don’t ever get into the game.” Samsung believes that cloud streaming can streamline this process by eliminating the need for game downloads, installations, and visits to app stores, thus enhancing user acquisition efficiency.
Interestingly, Samsung is not positioning Game Launcher as a subscription-based service but an ad-supported platform. This approach mirrors Samsung TV Plus, the company’s ad-supported video streaming service. By adopting this ad-based model, Samsung aims to address the challenges due to privacy concerns and restrictions on targeted advertising, which have affected game ads’ performance in recent years.
