Google Opening Office in Pakistan, TikTok and Meta Expected to Follow

    Google, the renowned global search engine, has officially going to open its office in Pakistan, marking a significant milestone for the country’s tech industry. The Federal Minister for Information Technology, Aminul Haq, announced this development, drawing nationwide attention.

    Minister Haq highlighted his ministry’s efforts in developing social media rules, which have reached their final stage and will soon be presented to the cabinet for approval. These rules aim to establish a regulated and secure online environment for Pakistani users.

    Google and TikTok Make Moves

    In addition to Google, TikTok, the popular video-sharing application, is also planning to establish an office in Pakistan, solidifying its commitment to the Pakistani market. Minister Haq emphasized the significance of having a physical or virtual presence in Pakistan, as it positively impacts the economy and local job market.

    Registration and Compliance: Google Leads the Way

    Google registered as a company in Pakistan in 2022, as confirmed by the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP). The company’s liaison office in Pakistan, operating under Section 435 of the Companies Act 2017, signifies compliance with the country’s social media rules. These rules mandate all social media companies to register in Pakistan, enabling the government to enforce the guidelines outlined in the “Removal and Blocking of Unlawful Online Content (Procedure, Oversight, and Safeguards) Rules, 2021.”

    TikTok and Meta Eye Pakistani Market

    TikTok is expected to follow Google’s lead and register itself in Pakistan. At the same time, speculations suggest that Meta, the parent company of Facebook, may also consider a similar move in the future.
