Project Meridian is the name of a new Pentagon study. It will shape how the US military fights its future wars. US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth announced it on September 30 2026 at the Marine Corps base in Quantico, Virginia. The study will run for 120 days. It will cover artificial intelligence, autonomy, robotics, directed energy and biotechnology.
Elon Musk will co lead the study. He joins Anduril founder Palmer Luckey and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich. The three will work under Pentagon Chief Technology Officer Emil Michael, according to TechCrunch.
The final report is due on January 28 2027. The report will be unclassified. It will be open to the public. A separate classified annex will hold sensitive material. The public version matters most. It means ordinary citizens can read how the Pentagon wants to reshape warfare.
This is Elon Musk’s first formal advisory role with the Pentagon. It comes after he left the Department of Government Efficiency in May 2025. And to be clear, he is not running the Pentagon here. It is a study and an advisory commission. Musk is only one of its three co leaders. The commission gives advice. It does not command troops or sign contracts.

Who Is Leading Project Meridian
The three co leaders each bring a very different world to the table. Musk leads SpaceX, Tesla and xAI. He has warned for years that AI is both the biggest hope and the biggest risk for humanity. His Grok AI work at xAI has already reached serious scale. MES Times has covered how Elon Musk’s Grok AI detects deepfakes and traces their online origins.
Palmer Luckey founded Anduril. It is one of the fastest growing defense tech companies in America. Anduril is built entirely around autonomous weapons and AI defense systems. Newt Gingrich is the former Speaker of the House. He has spent decades pushing for military reform. Above them sits Emil Michael. He is the Pentagon Chief Technology Officer. He will turn the findings into real Pentagon policy.
What The 120 Day Study Will Cover
Project Meridian will study five battle domains. They are all changing warfare right now. Artificial intelligence and autonomy cover drones and weapons that fly, drive and pick targets with little or no human input. Robotics covers ground machines. They can patrol, carry supplies and fight. Directed energy means laser and microwave weapons. Biotechnology covers soldier health and new materials.
The need for such a study is already visible on real battlefields. Ukraine has reported on a Russia MS001 AI drone that uses Nvidia Jetson Orin to hunt targets without commands. This is a sign that autonomous killing machines are no longer science fiction. Baykar of Turkey has also unveiled its MIZRAK AI kamikaze drone with over 1000 km range. These are the machines the study must understand.

On the same day as the announcement, Hegseth made a second big move. The Pentagon will create a new Autonomous Warfare Command. According to dig.watch, the command will bring autonomous systems into the military at speed. The message is clear. Autonomy is no longer a side project for the Pentagon. It is now the center of its plans.
The two moves fit together. Project Meridian is the brain. It studies what the future should look like. The Autonomous Warfare Command is the muscle. It will build that future. One thinks for 120 days. The other will keep working for years.
One shadow hangs over the study. Elon Musk’s companies hold major defense contracts. SpaceX launches military satellites and rockets for the government. It recently secured an 843 million dollar NASA contract to safely deorbit the International Space Station. His AI company xAI also works with defense customers.
Critics say a man whose companies bid for Pentagon money should not advise the Pentagon on what to buy. Supporters answer that Musk understands the technology better than almost anyone. They say his advice is exactly what the military needs. The Pentagon has not said how it will handle these conflicts. The questions are loud. They will likely grow louder as the January 2027 deadline gets closer.

The MES Times Take
Project Meridian shows the Pentagon finally admitting that the old way of buying slow and expensive weapons is finished. Bringing in builders like Musk and Luckey, next to a veteran like Gingrich, is a smart mix of speed and wisdom. Best of all, the final report will be public. The future of war should not be decided behind closed doors. Machines may fight the next war, but humans will always decide what peace is worth.
