Chinese technology company Xiaomi has officially launched its second electric vehicle, the YU7 Electric Sports SUV. The full reveal took place during an event in Beijing, where Xiaomi showed that it is ready to compete head-to-head with Tesla in the electric car market.
The YU7 is a luxury, high-performance SUV that is designed to challenge Tesla’s most popular vehicles, the Model Y and Model X. With its sleek European-style design and advanced Chinese technology, the YU7 shows Xiaomi’s strong plan to expand from electric sedans into the SUV market. The company’s fast growth in the electric vehicle industry is turning heads around the world.
Xiaomi entered the EV market only 18 months ago and has already passed Tesla in sales in China in 2025. This quick success has surprised many and proves how powerful Chinese companies have become in manufacturing and innovation.

The YU7 SUV offers powerful features and strong performance numbers. According to Xiaomi, the YU7 can reach a top speed of 253 kilometers per hour (157 mph) and can go from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in just 3.23 seconds. The SUV has a maximum driving range of 835 kilometers on a full charge. With ultra-fast charging, it can add 620 kilometers of range in only 15 minutes.
Xiaomi describes the YU7 as a “luxury high-performance SUV” and has packed it with smart features like intelligent door handles and a panoramic “hypervision” display that sits below the windshield. These features show that Xiaomi is focused on creating a car that looks modern and includes the latest technology.
The company did not announce the price of the YU7 at the launch event. However, Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun said in a social media post before the unveiling that the YU7 will go on sale in July. Many industry experts believe the SUV will attract strong interest from buyers, just like Xiaomi’s first electric vehicle, the SU7 sedan.
The SU7 received more than 120,000 preorders in just 36 hours when it was launched last year. Morgan Stanley analysts believe the YU7 will be just as successful. They described the YU7’s design as a mix between a Ferrari or Aston Martin, with a price tag similar to a Volkswagen.
“We find market expectations around Tesla’s near-term automotive business remain too high and do not fully reflect the quantum of incremental capacity and competition coming out of China, ultimately having an impact in international markets. Understanding this will help make more sense out of Tesla’s ‘all-in’ push into autonomy,” wrote Morgan Stanley analysts Adam Jonas and Andy Meng.
Xiaomi’s first vehicle, the SU7, marked the company’s bold move into the EV world. While both the SU7 and YU7 are currently available only in China, Xiaomi has announced plans to enter global markets by 2027. This could change the global EV landscape if Xiaomi continues to grow at this speed.
The rise of Chinese EV makers is becoming a big challenge for Tesla. The American electric car company is already facing lower sales in China as more local competitors, including Xiaomi, BYD, and Geely, enter the market with affordable and high-tech vehicles. For example, Geely recently introduced the Radar RD6 electric pickup to rival Tesla’s Cybertruck.
Morgan Stanley analysts said that competition from Chinese rivals would not only impact Tesla’s sales in China but also hurt its position in international markets. “The YU7 is just the latest sign that Chinese tech firms are taking EV performance and cost to the next level. China may have already won the EV battle,” the analysts added.
However, Xiaomi’s path hasn’t been smooth. Last month, its sales dropped, and the company faced criticism over marketing claims related to the high-end SU7 Ultra model.
There was also a tragic accident in March where an SU7 crashed into a cement barrier, killing three people. The car had just switched out of driver-assist mode. The accident has led to a regulatory crackdown in China, with officials now looking more closely at autonomous driving systems, according to report by Business Insider.
Even with these challenges, Xiaomi’s confidence in the YU7 is clear. The launch event in Beijing highlighted the company’s focus on innovation, speed, and design. Xiaomi’s fast production line can build an SU7 sedan in just 76 seconds, showing how far China’s manufacturing capabilities have come.
