China has unveiled the world’s most powerful hydraulic cylinder in Changzhou, Jiangsu province, marking a significant milestone in marine pile-driving technology. Developed by the state-owned China Communications Construction Company (CCCC), this engineering marvel is designed to revolutionize marine infrastructure projects.
The hydraulic cylinder boasts an astounding thrust power of 5,000 tons, equivalent to lifting 1,000 adult African elephants. Standing at 92 feet tall and 6.5 feet in diameter, it is as large as a ten-story building, CCTV said. This colossal structure will serve as the core component of a 150-meter pile-driving vessel currently under construction.
“It has been designed to provide a strong ‘heart’ for a 150-metre pile-driving vessel currently under construction,” noted a South China Morning Post (SCMP) report, quoting the Jiangsu-based Nanjing Morning Post.

Previously reliant on imports for key components, China has now achieved complete control over the design and manufacturing of such machines, reducing its dependence on Western technology. This advancement is expected to play a crucial role in various large-scale marine engineering projects, including the Hangzhou Bay Cross-Sea Railway Bridge, the world’s longest cross-sea high-speed railway bridge.
The introduction of this powerful hydraulic cylinder is set to enhance China’s capabilities in marine infrastructure significantly. It will be instrumental in constructing offshore drilling platforms and renewable energy facilities, particularly in deep-sea wind power generation. The innovative design and technology are poised to impact China’s offshore engineering sector profoundly.
China’s advancement in hydraulic technology positions it as a formidable competitor to established market leaders like Germany’s Bosch Rexroth and the United States’ Parker Hannifin Corporation. According to Global Market Insights, the hydraulic cylinder market, valued at USD 15 billion in 2023, is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 4.6%.
