China has introduced the Tianmushan No. 1, the world’s first hydrogen-powered multi-rotor drone with a range of 62 miles (100 kilometers). This significant milestone in unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technology is the work of the High-Performance Airborne Hydrogen Power System Development and Application team at Tianmushan Laboratory. The drone’s successful inaugural flight marks a pivotal moment in the evolution of industrial drones, promising to redefine operational standards in various sectors.
Traditional industrial drones have long been plagued by limitations such as restricted flight ranges and susceptibility to adverse weather conditions. These constraints have hindered their effectiveness in critical operations like emergency rescue, power inspections, and environmental monitoring. The Tianmushan No. 1 addresses these issues head-on, offering a robust solution that can operate in challenging environments while maintaining an extended flight range.
“The Tianmushan No. 1 has been developed to solve the industry pain points of insufficient endurance and low-temperature resistance of industrial drones,” stated Tianmushan Laboratory in a recent press release.

“The drone’s empty weight is 19kg, the maximum load weight is 6kg, the maximum endurance is over 4 hours, and its overall performance and product design have reached the industry-leading level,” noted Tianmushan Laboratory.
The drone’s lightweight carbon fiber body, weighing just 42 pounds (19 kilograms), further enhances its efficiency and performance, making it a formidable tool for various industrial applications.
UAV is its hydrogen fuel cell system, a feature that distinguishes it from traditional drones. This advanced power source not only extends the drone’s flight time but also ensures optimal performance under demanding conditions. The system is complemented by an air-cooled fuel cell stack, which maintains efficiency even in extreme cold and high-altitude environments.
“It uses a self-developed hydrogen fuel cell power system, an integrated lightweight carbon fiber fuselage, an integrated intelligent parachute system design, and customized four types of carbon fiber hydrogen storage bottles,” Tianmushan Laboratory elaborated in their statement.
The drone also features an integrated intelligent parachute system, a world-first in mass-produced hydrogen-powered drones. This safety feature is designed to deploy automatically in the event of a malfunction, protecting both the drone and its surroundings from potential harm.
