Tiny Magnetic Robot Developed to Dissolve Kidney Stones Without Surgery

Kidney stones are known to be one of the most painful medical conditions. For people who suffer from them repeatedly, the problem becomes even more serious. Standard oral medicines often take a long time to work and are not always effective. In many cases, surgery remains the only option when stones block the urinary tract. Now, a Tiny Magnetic Robot is offering a new possible way forward in treatment.

But now researchers at the University of Waterloo in Canada, led by Dr. Veronika Magdanz, have introduced a new approach that could change the future of treatment. They have created a tiny magnetic robot that can directly dissolve kidney stones inside the urinary tract.

The device is very small and soft, only about one centimeter long. It is made from hydrogel and elastomer, which makes it flexible. Inside the strip, researchers have placed a small magnet along with an enzyme called urease. This enzyme is the key to breaking down kidney stones.

The robot is not inserted through surgery but with the help of a catheter into the bladder. Once inside, doctors can guide it using a robotic arm fitted with a rotating magnet. The movement allows the device to wiggle and carefully travel through the urinary tract.

When it finally reaches the kidney stone, the device is stopped and held in place by placing a magnetic patch on the patient’s skin. From there, the tiny robot begins its job. It slowly releases urease into the surrounding urine. The enzyme changes the pH level of urine, making it less acidic.

Kidney stones usually survive in acidic conditions, but when the acidity is reduced, they start to dissolve. The stone then breaks into smaller pieces which can pass naturally in urine, reducing the need for surgery and giving patients relief much faster.

Dr. Magdanz explained “Our goal is to provide an effective alternative to existing treatment methods. We hope accelerated stone dissolution will relieve the pain faster and help patients pass stones quickly,” she said.

In the laboratory, researchers tested the device in a 3D-printed model of the human urinary tract. They filled it with synthetic urine to make the test realistic. The device successfully increased the urine pH from 6, which is common in people with kidney stones, to 7.

In only five days, the stones lost around 30 percent of their weight. This was enough for them to be passed naturally by the body. The pH change also lasted for up to three months, giving patients a long-term protective effect.

Kidney stones are formed when salts and minerals combine inside urine. They are solid and can cause severe pain when traveling through the urethra. Many people suffer from stones again and again. While some oral medicines can dissolve them, they are slow and sometimes do not work.

In urgent situations, surgical removal is the only choice. Delivering treatment directly to the stone instead of relying on medicine to travel through the whole body could be a much faster and safer method. That is why this Tiny Magnetic Robot is seen as a breakthrough in medical science.

The next step for the researchers will be animal trials. They want to test the device in larger living systems to ensure it is both safe and effective. The team is also working on refining the control system that uses real-time ultrasound.

With ultrasound guidance, doctors can place the device more precisely within the urinary tract. If the upcoming trials are successful, human clinical studies could follow in the near future.

Experts believe that such technology could transform how hospitals deal with kidney stones. Patients who once faced painful surgeries and long recovery times may instead receive a simple, guided, non-surgical procedure. The filament is designed to pass naturally through the body after treatment, which makes the process even safer.

The findings of this research have been published in the scientific journal Advanced Healthcare Materials. The study is already receiving attention worldwide as a possible revolution in urology and patient care.

Kidney stones may never stop forming in some patients, but the way they are treated might soon change forever. A device that looks so simple could actually save people from weeks of pain and difficult operations.

Dr. Magdanz said, “This is only the beginning. We believe this technology can bring real relief to patients suffering from one of the most painful conditions known in medicine.”
