The top 6 things we’d like to discover in Google’s Pixel 6a.

Official confirmation of what to expect is likely to be forthcoming — shortly — possibly as early as Google I/O next month. In the meantime, this is what we’d want to see from Google’s next smartphone in the mid-range.

A Tensor CPU

Since we’ve heard the news from the beginning of November that the next phone in the series will have identical chipsets to the Pixel 6 series, this is an acceptable request for us to see a Tensor processor inside Pixel 6a. Google’s self-branded chip may not be the fastest available; however, it offers the 600-dollar Pixel 6’s performance and flagship specs for a reasonable price. Its performance would be more impressive at a lower price.

The Pixel 6 has a history of erratic and slow updates, but Tensor may be the culprit. If so an issue, this update isn’t without a caveat: we’d prefer a Tensor-powered 6a when it’s able to get regular, stable updates.

New camera hardware

Some reports make us believe that Google’s Pixel 6a will run on Tensor and claim that this new middle-of-the-road model will come with the same camera technology that the Pixel 5a has -therefore, this model appears more flimsy. However, we’d be delighted to have a Pixel 6a with higher-quality camera sensors.

The Pixel 5, as that like the Pixel 5 before it, utilized Sony’s IMX363 sensor as its primary camera. Before it was the Pixel 6 series, every Pixel phone before the Pixel 3 had used the same Sony sensor. Google can pull some impressive images from it thanks to its finely tuned software. However, its latest phones’ massive sensors significantly improved image quality from Pixel 5 to Pixel 5. It would be fantastic for the Pixel series to receive a similar enhancement this year.

Longer update support

Pixel phones were able to receive updates for longer than phones from other Android manufacturer. However, recently, Samsung has been stealing Google’s thunder by promising to provide four OS upgrades and five years of security updates for selected Galaxy phones. It’s not a great reflection of Samsung’s Pixel 6 and 6 Pro’s promise of 3 OS upgrades and five years of security updates, and it’s even less so with Pixel 5a. Pixel 5a is expected to receive OS and security patches through August 2024, which is just three years after it was released.

At the very minimum, we’d love to have the Pixel 6a launched with the same commitment to updates offered previously with the Pixel 6 — three years of Android updates and five years’ worth of updates to security. In the long run, it would be fantastic for the Pixel 6a if Google could promise an additional period for both the 6a and the current Pixel 6.

Wireless charging

Wireless charging is among Google’s A-series features, and series phones have always been missing. This is logical, as it’s not difficult to believe that wireless charging is crucial to smartphone user experience in the present. But, given that last season’s Pixel 5a, which was also the first Pixel phone to be rated for dust and water resistance and dust resistance, we’re hoping the 6a will also be a first. Wireless charging makes sense since more wireless-charging Pixels will mean more people are likely to buy Google’s expensive wireless chargers. However, it’s unlikely that a cost-effective device would be able to benefit from the 2nd-generation Pixel Stand’s 20+ watt charging speed.

High-refresh rate display

It would be great to get wireless charging and an improved display in the 6a, but it isn’t realistic. If it’s not one of them, we’d like to see the other.

Nowadays, it’s not unusual to see low-cost phones such as those that cost $250, like the Samsung Galaxy A13 rocking 90Hz panels. The 90Hz panel in question isn’t the best. However, the standards are evolving, so a phone like the Pixel 6a with 60Hz would be somewhat outdated even at a moderate price such as the 5a’s $450.

Wider availability

Pixel 5a Pixel 5a is a complicated phone to obtain for most people living on Earth. Even though the Pixel 6 and the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro are available in a handful of countries, you can only purchase the Pixel 5a (officially at a minimum) when you reside in either of the two locations in the United States or Japan.

Wider availability for Pixel 6a Pixel 6a would be a win for everyone: users from more areas will have another option for mid-range phones, and Google will have more customers to promote the product. We’ll be watching to determine if the company can achieve these Supply chain issues that haven’t been resolved this year and if Google’s ability to make Pixel 6a phones is limited. We’ll probably see it use the same market as last time.
