Visitors to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art were deceived into believing that a pair of glasses, placed on the floor by a 17-year-old prankster, was a postmodern art installation. This incident has ignited a conversation about the perception and interpretation of modern art.
TJ Khayatan, the mastermind behind the prank, shared his experience with BuzzFeed. “Upon first arrival, we were quite impressed with the artwork and paintings presented in the huge facility,” he said. However, Khayatan and his friends found some of the exhibits less impressive. To test the theory that people would interpret anything in a gallery setting as art, Khayatan set a pair of glasses on the floor and walked away.
The reaction was swift and surprising. Visitors began to surround the glasses, keeping a respectful distance and snapping photos of the ‘artwork.’ The sight of people earnestly contemplating the glasses as an artistic statement provided Khayatan with both amusement and insight into the nature of art appreciation.
“I like to think they imagined the floored glasses to represent the dumbing down of culture, or perhaps the viewing of life through a lens, possibly with a nice, lower-case title like ‘myopia’ or ‘real eyes (real lies)’,” Khayatan mused.

The moment was captured and shared on Twitter by Khayatan, quickly gaining traction and going viral with over 45,000 retweets. This incident, ironically, became a modern art piece in itself, highlighting the power of social media in shaping public perception.
Despite the prank, Khayatan was quick to defend modern art. “I can agree that modern art can be a joke sometimes, but art is a way to express our own creativity,” he said. “Some may interpret it as a joke; some might find great spiritual meaning in it. At the end of the day, I see it as a pleasure for open-minded people and imaginative minds.”

The prank underscores a deeper commentary on the subjective nature of art. The fact that a pair of glasses could be mistaken for a masterpiece challenges the traditional notions of what constitutes art. It raises questions about the role of context and presentation in the art world.
This incident at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art serves as a humorous yet poignant reminder of the fluid boundaries of art and the diverse interpretations it can evoke. Whether seen as a clever joke or a meaningful commentary, it has certainly left its mark on the visitors and the wider online community.
