Scientists Created a Gel That Triggers Hair Growth and May Cure Baldness Naturally

sugar gel cure baldness

Scientists have discovered that a sugar-based gel might help cure baldness. This discovery happened by accident. In lab tests, the gel helped male mice regrow thick fur in areas affected by testosterone-driven hair loss. The findings could offer a new treatment for millions of people suffering from hair loss worldwide.

Researchers were initially studying a natural sugar called deoxyribose, which helps heal wounds. While testing it on mice, they noticed something surprising. The fur around the treated wounds was growing back faster than usual. Intrigued by this, the team decided to investigate further, leading to a groundbreaking discovery.

The research team, including scientists from the University of Sheffield in the UK and COMSATS University in Pakistan, conducted a more detailed study. They used male mice with testosterone-related hair loss and removed fur from their backs.

Every day, the mice were treated with the deoxyribose sugar gel. Within weeks, the treated mice showed “robust” hair regrowth, with long, thick fur growing back where the gel was applied.

The results were impressive. The deoxyribose gel worked almost as well as minoxidil, a well-known treatment for hair loss. Minoxidil is commonly used for hair growth in people with male-pattern baldness. However, the sugar gel showed additional benefits: it is biodegradable, non-toxic, and free from significant side effects.

In the study, the researchers also tested combining both the sugar gel and minoxidil. However, the combination did not improve results. Mice treated with only the deoxyribose gel saw nearly 90% hair regrowth, similar to the effects of minoxidil.

Photographs of mice with male pattern baldness at different time intervals, including mice without any treatment (NC), mouse models of male pattern baldness (T-1), gel without medicine (T-2), gel with deoxyribose sugars (T-3), minoxidil (T-4), deoxyribose sugar and minoxidil gel (T-5).

The researchers believe that the sugar may stimulate blood flow to the hair follicles. This increased blood supply that could help hair grow back thicker and faster. By improving the blood flow to the hair roots, the sugar gel may encourage hair regrowth.

Photographs taken during the 20-day trial show clear signs of hair regrowth, and scientists found more blood vessels and skin cells around the treated areas. These changes may explain why the gel works so well, though further research is needed to confirm the exact mechanism.

Currently, there are only two FDA-approved drugs to treat hair loss: minoxidil and finasteride. While minoxidil can be effective, it doesn’t work for everyone. Some people may turn to finasteride, which is a prescription drug that helps reduce hair loss by blocking a hormone linked to baldness. However, finasteride is not approved for women, and it can cause severe side effects in men, such as erectile dysfunction and reduced libido.

In contrast, the deoxyribose sugar gel presents a potentially safer option. Unlike other hair loss treatments, it is biodegradable and has no significant side effects, making it an attractive alternative, especially for women who cannot use drugs like finasteride.

The results from this mouse study are promising, scientists have not yet tested the gel on humans or women. The research is still in its early stages, and more studies are needed to determine if the gel will be effective for human hair loss.

If the gel proves to be effective in humans, it could be used not only for treating male-pattern baldness but also for people who experience hair loss due to chemotherapy. The gel could also stimulate the regrowth of eyebrows and eyelashes.

This discovery is particularly exciting because it opens up a new avenue of research into hair loss treatments. Most treatments currently available, like minoxidil and finasteride, come with unwanted side effects or do not work for everyone. The deoxyribose gel offers a new, natural option that could benefit millions of people worldwide who are dealing with hair loss.

Researchers are hopeful that their work will lead to a new treatment that is both safe and effective. “The research we have done is very much in the early stages, but the results are promising and warrant further investigation,” said Sheila MacNeil, one of the lead researchers.

In the coming years, we may see more breakthroughs in the field of hair loss treatments. If studies confirm the effectiveness of this sugar gel, it could fight against baldness, offering a safer, more natural option for those looking to regain their hair.

The study was published in Frontiers in Pharmacology.
