Saudi Arabia’s ambitious mega-city project, NEOM, has taken a big step forward. On Sunday, they opened their first real-world showcase: Sindalah Island. This luxury destination on the Red Sea has high-end restaurants, hotels, and places for yachts to dock. The opening happened just before a major investor forum in Riyadh, often called “Davos in the Desert.”
NEOM’s chief executive, Nadhmi al-Nasr, spoke about Sindalah’s role in boosting luxury tourism in Saudi Arabia. “NEOM is committed to supporting the Kingdom’s new era of luxury tourism, with the opening of Sindalah,” al-Nasr said. He described Sindalah as the first taste of what NEOM plans to offer in the future. This island is a glimpse into NEOM’s vision of luxury and innovation.
Sindalah Island covers 840,000 square meters, which is about 200 acres. By 2028, it will be able to host up to 2,400 guests every day. The island offers a mix of luxury and futuristic designs, aimed at attracting high-end travelers. The launch of Sindalah comes at a time when there are still many doubts about whether NEOM can be fully realized.
NEOM is most famous for its project called “The Line.” The Line is planned to be a series of twin skyscrapers covered in mirrors, stretching 170 kilometers from the coast into the desert. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman announced The Line in 2022.

He said it would house over one million people by 2030, and eventually grow to nine million by 2045. However, a report from Bloomberg earlier this year suggested that these numbers might be too high. The report said only 300,000 people might live in The Line by the end of this decade, and only 2.4 kilometers of the project would be finished by then.
Even with these lower projections, work on NEOM continues as part of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030. This vision aims to diversify the economy of the world’s largest oil exporter and prepare for a future without oil. Saudi Arabia’s commitment to this vision is shown through other large projects, like winning the bid to host the 2034 FIFA World Cup. This event gives Saudi Arabia ten years to build new stadiums and improve hotels and transportation.

In December, Saudi Finance Minister Mohammed al-Jadaan said that the timelines for some major projects would be extended past 2030. He did not say which projects, but this decision shows a strategic approach to making sure Vision 2030’s goals are met successfully.
Sindalah Island is an important step in showing NEOM’s potential. By opening a real luxury destination, NEOM aims to attract both investors and tourists. This can help build confidence in the project. Sindalah shows that NEOM is making progress and can deliver on its promises of luxury and innovation.
The opening of Sindalah Island is just the beginning. NEOM has many more plans that will unfold over the coming years. The Line is one of the most talked-about projects, but there are also plans for other futuristic cities and developments. Each of these projects aims to push the boundaries of what is possible in city living, with a focus on technology, sustainability, and luxury.
While the vision is grand, there are many challenges ahead. Building such a massive and futuristic city requires a lot of resources, planning, and time. The initial projections for The Line have been adjusted, which shows that the road to achieving Vision 2030 will not be easy. However, the Saudi government is committed to these projects, and Sindalah Island is a positive sign that progress is being made.
NEOM and its projects like Sindalah Island are also a way for Saudi Arabia to engage with the world. By hosting events like the 2034 FIFA World Cup and creating luxury destinations, Saudi Arabia is opening its doors to more international visitors and investors. This engagement is crucial for the success of Vision 2030, as it will bring in new ideas, technologies, and investments.
