Samsung is rolling out the GPS stability improvements to one more discontinued smartphone. The Galaxy Note 8 is the latest recipient of the undetailed but seemingly important GPS update. The company has already seeded the update to the Galaxy J7, Galaxy S7, and Galaxy S8 series phones.

The latest update for the Galaxy Note 8 comes with firmware version N950FXXUGDVG5 and is already available pretty widely. According to SamMobile, the new software package is rolling out to users in dozens of countries around the world, including the UK, France, Italy, Portugal, Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, South Africa, and Australia. It should reach other markets such as the US in the coming days.

As expected, this update doesn’t bring anything apart from the aforementioned GPS stability improvements. Not even a new Security Patch. The Galaxy Note 8, which last received an update in August 2021, remains on the Security Patch from that month. Samsung didn’t seed new security patches with the latest update for Galaxy J7, Galaxy S7, and Galaxy S8 series phones either. It’s just the GPS fix that users are getting. Unfortunately, the company doesn’t tell what exactly has been fixed.

Nonetheless, for those few still holding on to these discontinued smartphones, you should soon get a new OTA (over the air) update if you haven’t already. Make sure to install it as soon as possible for improved GPS performance.

This GPS update may be available for more discontinued Galaxy phones

The Galaxy Note 8 may not be the last discontinued Samsung smartphone to receive this GPS update. The company may not detail the precise fix or improvements that users are getting, but it appears to be quite an important update and should be on the way for more Galaxy devices. You just don’t push a new software update to phones launched more than seven years ago.

As spotted in Samsung’s firmware developments, the Galaxy S6 series from 2015 could pick up this update next. We will let you know if and when it does. However, if you’re still using this phone, or any other mentioned in this article, you seriously need to consider upgrading to a newer model. Samsung has stopped offering new security patches to these devices, so you are vulnerable to various threats. The company now promises up to five years of security patches even for some mid-range models. So your next Galaxy smartphone would be protected for longer than before.
