NASA’s Artemis II mission has created history by sending humans farther from Earth than ever before. The four astronauts onboard the Orion spacecraft reached a distance of 252,756 miles from Earth, breaking the record set by Apollo 13 in 1970 by 4,111 miles. This mission marks a milestone in space exploration, demonstrating that humans are moving closer to returning to the Moon and eventually traveling to Mars.
The moment came at 1:57 PM Eastern Time, when the crew officially passed the previous record. Inside the spacecraft, the astronauts hugged each other as they realized they had achieved something that no human had done before. The crew includes Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen. Their journey has taken them around 5,000 miles beyond the Moon, making them the most distant humans in history.
Jeremy Hansen shared his thoughts during the mission, saying, “It is blowing my mind what you can see with the naked eye from the moon right now. It is just unbelievable.” He also gave an inspiring message to future generations, urging them to ensure this record is not preserved for long and to continue pushing the limits of exploration.
The mission reached its farthest point at 7:02 PM ET, before the spacecraft began its journey back to Earth. This moment marked the highest distance humans have ever traveled from their home planet. Earlier, the Apollo 13 astronauts had reached 248,655 miles during their 1970 mission, which ended in an emergency but still set a historic record at the time.

As the Orion spacecraft moved around the far side of the Moon, communication with Earth was lost for about 40 minutes. This is because the Moon blocked the signal between the spacecraft and NASA’s communication systems. Just before the blackout, Victor Glover calmly said, “We will see you on the other side.” This moment showed both the crew’s risks and confidence during such a critical part of the mission.
When communication was restored, Christina Koch shared an emotional message after seeing Earth again. She said, “We will always choose Earth, we will always choose each other.” Her words reflected the deep connection the astronauts felt to their home planet after traveling so far away.
The mission also allowed astronauts to study the Moon in more detail. NASA gave them a list of important areas on the lunar surface to observe. These included large craters such as the Orientale and Hertzsprung basins. The crew carefully looked at these areas and took thousands of photos. Scientists believe that human observation remains very important, as the human eye can sometimes catch small details that machines may miss.

Christina Koch described her experience of looking at the Moon by saying, “I just had an overwhelming sense of being moved by looking at the moon. It lasted just a second or two, and I actually couldn’t even make it happen again.” She added, “The truth is, the moon really is its own body in the universe. It is not just a poster in the sky. It is a real place.”
The astronauts suggested naming a crater “Carroll” in honor of Reid Wiseman’s late wife, who passed away in 2020. Jeremy Hansen explained this emotional decision by saying, “It’s a bright spot on the moon, and we would like to call it Carroll.” The crew also suggested naming another crater “Integrity” after their spacecraft.
During the mission, the astronauts also observed rare space events. They observed meteor impacts on the Moon’s surface, which appeared as bright flashes in the dark. They also experienced a solar eclipse, which allowed them to study the Sun’s outer layer. Victor Glover described the view by saying, “It just looks unreal.”
As the spacecraft completed its observations, it began its journey back to Earth. At around 9:35 PM ET, Orion was on its return path after completing its historic flyby. The mission is expected to last nearly 10 days in total.
Artemis II is an important test mission for NASA’s future plans. The data collected will help improve technology and prepare for future missions that aim to land humans on the Moon again by 2028.
