Intel Invests $700 Million in Immersion Liquid Cooling Solutions.

The company also released the first open IP (open intellectual property) immersion cooling solution and reference design in the industry that allows data centres to use liquid immersion cooling without investing in custom solutions.

Today, Intel unveiled the first open IP reference design for an easy to deploy and scaleable total immersion liquid cooling system. This was the first step toward the de-democratization of liquid cooling solutions. This reference design is a proof-of-concept developed in partnership with Intel Taiwan and the Taiwanese ecosystem over a gradual approach. Intel will work closely with many server OEMs in Taiwan to address the needs of server suppliers and users.

Intel doesn’t stop at a single reference design. Intel plans to create its Oregon Research and Design Mega Lab on its Jones Farm campus. It will be dedicated to immersion cooling and water usage effectiveness. Construction will begin today, and the centre will be operational by late 2023.

This new lab will ensure that Intel’s future products in data centres are Xeon and Optane, network interfaces and switchgear, Agilex FPGAs and Xe accelerators. Habana accelerators and other products are also available for immersion liquid coolingIntel aims for ILC to be as common as traditional liquid and air cooling systems.

Modern Intel Xeon Scalable processors have a thermal design of around 270W per socket. On the other hand, artificial intelligence and high-performance computing accelerators can consume as much as 700W per socket OAM or SXM5. According to 2SRSi data, liquid cooling is losing its appeal in cost and efficiency. The heat dissipation rate of about 6000W per machine means that air and liquid cooling are less attractive.

Intel believes that energy reuse and immersion liquid cooling could lower the power consumption of cooling systems for data centres. This would make them more affordable to run and reduce pollution from various power plants. However, immersion liquid cooling (ILC) solutions are often based on proprietary hardware. Intel has worked with several ILC specialists over the past year to make immersion liquid cooling more affordable for mainstream customers.

“Intel’s commitment to its global partnerships can be seen in today’s announcements,” stated Sandra L. Rivera (Intel executive vice president and general manager, Datacenter and AI Group). “The future of data centre design and data centre technology is based on innovative, sustainable technologies and practices. I am proud to be part of the daily work to make this a reality.
