One of the most difficult hurdles for those considering transitioning into an electric motor is setting up an area in your home that can charge your vehicle. Most of the time, installing an at-home EV charger could cost thousands of dollars if you upgrade your equipment or electrical panel.
In the last week, tech-focused brand Siemens has teamed up with an organization called ConnectDER to introduce a cost-effective new home charger for electric vehicles adapter installed in just 15 minutes. If the product performs as it should, it will not only be a game changer for the EV market but could also help customers save money.
If you’ve recently installed the EV charger in your house or been offered a quote for the installation, you know how costly the process could be. Numerous experts say that over 50% of homes require upgrades and changes that can cost between $3,000 and $5,000 to prepare a house for an electric vehicle. You’ll still need to purchase the expensive charger.
ConnectDER creates meters “collars” that get installed between the electric meter in your home that every house across the U.S. is equipped with and the socket for a meter.
This is a plug-and-play system that eliminates your electric panel at home.
Therefore, owners can purchase this Siemens adapter and connect their EV charger directly onto the meter collar rather than changing and upgrading an electric panel. According to Siemens, they will reduce the installation cost by 60 to 80 percent.
We haven’t heard from Siemens, or ConnectDER has yet announced pricing. There’s good news, however. In a statement made to the Electrek, announced they’re negotiating the price in addition to “it will be a fraction of the cost of a service panel upgrade or other modifications often needed to make for a charger.”
The partnership will be ConnectDER providing adapters specifically for Siemens that will be available by the beginning of 2023.
