Great North African Eclipse
SHARE

On August 2, 2027, the world will witness one of the most breathtaking celestial events of the 21st century. Known as the “Great North African Eclipse,” this total solar eclipse will plunge parts of the Earth into darkness for up to six minutes and 23 seconds.

It will be the longest total eclipse visible from land between 1991 and 2114. For millions of people across Southern Europe, North Africa, and parts of the Middle East, it promises to be an unforgettable moment.

The eclipse will begin its journey over the North Atlantic Ocean before moving across Southern Spain, Gibraltar, and sweeping through Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, and Egypt. It will finally end its spectacular path in the Indian Ocean.

The historic Egyptian city of Luxor will be the best place to watch the eclipse, offering the longest duration of total darkness. For those unable to make it to Luxor, excellent views will still be available in other parts of North Africa and Southern Europe.

According to Space, astronomer Jean Meeus explained why this eclipse is so special. “The alignment of the Moon and Earth during this event is perfect,” he said. “The Moon will be at perigee, its closest point to Earth, making it appear larger in the sky.

Countries in the red zone have the best chance of viewing the totality in full

At the same time, Earth will be at aphelion, its farthest point from the Sun. This makes the Sun appear slightly smaller. This is why totality will last longer than usual.

Meeus added that such a combination is rare. Most total eclipses last less than three minutes. This one gives observers more than six minutes. They can marvel at the Sun’s corona, normally hidden by brightness.

A total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon completely covers the Sun. It blocks sunlight and casts a shadow on Earth. The darkest part is called the “path of totality.” In this zone, the eclipse appears in full glory. People will see day turn into night. Stars may also become visible.

Dr Aisha Khalid, a solar scientist, said this is not just a pretty sight. It is a chance to study the Sun’s outer atmosphere, called the corona. It is only visible during a total eclipse. Scientists will use this rare window to observe solar flares and magnetic field activity in detail.

Western and northwestern states like Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Goa will see the Moon partially cover the Sun. The partial eclipse will occur between 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM local time, but sunset may block visibility in some western coastal areas.

“It is important to remember that looking directly at the Sun without proper protection is dangerous,” warned Dr. Khalid. “Even during a partial eclipse, ordinary sunglasses do not protect the eyes. People should use certified solar glasses or viewers to protect their eyes.”

The Great North African Eclipse also carries cultural significance. In India, people link solar eclipses to ancient myths about celestial demons Rahu and Ketu that swallow the Sun. Many people follow rituals such as fasting and bathing in holy rivers during an eclipse.

But with modern science, there’s now a growing emphasis on enjoying such events safely and understanding them as part of natural cosmic cycles.

NASA and other space agencies plan to live-stream the eclipse for those unable to travel. This will allow millions around the world to experience the wonder of a total solar eclipse from the safety of their homes.

“This is not just another eclipse,” said Dr. Khalid. “It’s the longest on land for over a century. If you miss it, the next chance for something this spectacular won’t come until 2114.”
