Ford has launched a perfume called Mach-Eau. It smells just like petrol. Yes, you read that right—a fragrance that brings back the scent of gasoline. This perfume is not about fashion or daily use.
It’s designed for people who are switching from fuel-powered cars to electric vehicles (EVs) but still miss the smell of petrol. Ford wants to give them something familiar in this big change.
The idea for this perfume started with a survey. Ford Europe asked drivers how they feel about moving to electric cars. The results were surprising. Nearly 70 percent said they would miss the smell of petrol.
One in five said it would be the scent they miss the most. Petrol ranked higher than wine and cheese. It shows how strong the emotional connection is between drivers and the smell of fuel.
To bring this idea to life, Ford worked with a fragrance company called Olfiction. They launched the perfume at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, a famous event for car fans. The scent is not just petrol. It’s a mix of smells that remind people of driving. Ford said they wanted to capture the full experience, not just the fuel.

The perfume includes a mix of ingredients. There’s benzaldehyde, which has an almond-like smell, similar to what you might find inside a car. Then there’s para-Cresol, which smells like tires. These smells are combined with others like blue ginger, lavender, geranium, and sandalwood.
Together, they create a smoky, metallic, and rubbery fragrance. Ford even added what they call an “animal element” to remind people of the Mustang’s horse symbol.
Ford knows that buying a car like the Mustang Mach-E GT, which costs about $59,000 or ₹4,897,000, is a big step into the future. But they also know that some people will miss the small things—like the smell of petrol when starting the engine. That’s where Mach-Eau comes in.
Ford said, “You just dropped a cool $59,000 on a Ford Mustang Mach-E GT, your own sporty slice of our electric future… what happens when you go to plug in your new car and you miss that telltale whiff of gasoline smell?” Their answer is this perfume.
You can’t buy Mach-Eau in stores. Ford made it just for the event. It’s not for sale—at least not yet. But they gave everyone a very clear idea of what it smells like. The packaging is elegant, and the smell is strong but pleasant. It’s meant to stir memories without being too much.
Ford’s real goal is to help more people feel excited about switching to electric cars. They know it’s not just about charging speed or battery range. It’s about how the car feels and what it reminds you of. With Mach-Eau, Ford wants to show that EVs can be just as exciting as gas cars. The perfume is just a fun way to keep the old memories alive while moving into a cleaner, greener future.
This also promotes the Mustang Mach-E and the F-150 Lightning. Both are fully electric vehicles designed for people who want power and performance without emissions. By adding a scent that brings back the feeling of a gas car, Ford is trying to make the switch smoother.
Mach-Eau may not be something you wear every day, but it proves that even a smell can be powerful. It connects the past with the future and shows that Ford is thinking about every detail—even the air around you when you drive.
