Qatar Airways has officially launched its first Boeing 777 aircraft equipped with SpaceX’s Starlink internet service, marking a significant milestone in in-flight connectivity. The inaugural flight, QR1, took off from Doha and landed in London, showcasing the future of high-speed, reliable internet for airline passengers.
To celebrate this historic event, Qatar Airways facilitated an in-flight video call between its Group Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Badr Mohammed Al-Meer, and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk. This groundbreaking interaction, conducted at 35,000 feet, highlighted the robust capabilities of the Starlink service. Musk assured passengers and viewers, “Over time, you’ll find it just gets better and better. This is the minimum, and it only gets better from here.”
Qatar Airways’ initial plan was to equip three aircraft with Starlink by the end of 2024. However, the airline has surpassed its expectations, now aiming to have 12 Boeing 777-300s equipped with the service by year-end. The airline’s commitment doesn’t stop there; it plans to introduce Starlink across its entire Boeing 777 fleet by 2025, with the Airbus A350 fleet following suit in the summer of 2025. This accelerated rollout underscores Qatar Airways’ dedication to enhancing passenger experience.

The introduction of Starlink on Qatar Airways flights promises to revolutionize in-flight internet connectivity. Unlike the often slow and unreliable internet services currently offered by many airlines, Starlink delivers high-speed, low-latency internet via a constellation of around 6,000 satellites. Passengers can now enjoy seamless streaming, video calls, and online gaming, making their journey more enjoyable and productive.
During the inaugural flight, Business Insider reported download speeds as fast as 215 megabits per second, far surpassing typical in-flight internet speeds. This service is available free of charge to all passengers, regardless of cabin class, setting a new standard in the aviation industry.
In a press release, Qatar Airways’ Group Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Badr Mohammed Al-Meer, expressed his enthusiasm for the Starlink service: “We are thrilled to launch our first Starlink-equipped flight, proving once again why Qatar Airways is at the forefront of the aviation industry. This milestone, paired with our commitment to rapidly rollout Starlink across our entire modern fleet, demonstrates our relentless pursuit of offering passengers an in-flight experience that transcends the constraints of traditional air travel.”
Qatar Airways’ adoption of Starlink is a strategic move to stay ahead in the competitive airline market. The airline’s initiative to offer free high-speed internet is a direct challenge to competitors that typically provide lower-speed, paid services. By 2025, Qatar Airways aims to provide Starlink internet across all its Boeing 777 and Airbus A350 aircraft, ensuring passengers enjoy the best possible in-flight connectivity.

Qatar Airways is the first airline in the Middle East and North Africa region to offer Starlink’s high-speed internet service. This move positions the airline as a leader in technological innovation and passenger experience. The introduction of Starlink is part of Qatar Airways’ broader strategy, dubbed “Qatar Airways 2.0,” which includes developing a new First Class concept and expanding its fleet with new aircraft orders from Boeing and Airbus.
The launch of Starlink comes at a time when global passenger demand is surging. According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), global passenger demand increased by 8.6% in August 2024 compared to the previous year, with Middle Eastern carriers seeing a 4.9% year-on-year rise. This growing demand underscores the importance of offering superior in-flight services to attract and retain passengers.
Qatar Airways is not alone in recognizing the potential of Starlink. Other airlines, such as Air New Zealand and Hawaiian Airlines, have also announced plans to implement Starlink on their aircraft. Air New Zealand CEO Greg Foran recently highlighted the importance of reliable and fast in-flight internet, predicting that it will become ubiquitous among full-service carriers.
