Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has publicly shared a change in his personal beliefs, saying that after many years of atheism, he now believes that God exists. The billionaire entrepreneur, who is known worldwide for his work in technology, space exploration, and artificial intelligence, said he believes the universe came from something and that God is the Creator.
Musk made these comments during a recent appearance on The Katie Miller Podcast, where he spoke about a wide range of topics, including AI, government efficiency, and his views on faith and existence. His remarks have drawn global attention, showing a clear shift from the position he held for most of his adult life.
During the podcast, host Katie Miller asked Musk a simple but direct question. “Who do you look up to the most?” she said. “The Creator,” Musk replied. Miller then followed up by asking about his current position on God. “God is the Creator,” Musk said.
When Miller pressed further and asked, “You don’t believe in God, though, do you?” Musk responded, “Well, I believe this universe came from something. People have different labels.”
Musk explained that while he now believes in a Creator, he does not follow or identify with any specific religion. He said people around the world describe God in different ways, but the idea that the universe created itself does not make sense to him.
These comments showed a clear change from Musk’s earlier statements. For many years, he openly described himself as an atheist or agnostic. In 2022, he even joked online that he was fine with going to hell if that was his destination, saying that most humans who ever lived would likely be there as well.
However, since 2022, Musk has gradually spoken more positively about religion, especially Christianity. Last year, he described himself as a “cultural Christian,” a term used to describe someone who values Christian teachings and traditions without fully accepting all religious beliefs.
“I would say I’m probably a cultural Christian,” Musk said in an interview. “I was brought up as an Anglican, and I was baptized.”
He has repeatedly praised the teachings of Jesus, especially ideas such as love, kindness, forgiveness, and compassion. Musk has said these values are wise and important for society and social stability. At one point, he admitted that he was “a fool for not appreciating its profound wisdom” earlier in life.
Musk has also warned that Western civilization could face serious problems if it completely loses Christianity and its moral foundations. He believes religion has played a major role in shaping culture, ethics, and social order.
During the podcast, Musk also spoke about his long-standing belief in simulation theory, which posits that reality could be an advanced computer simulation. He connected this idea with his belief in a Creator, offering a unique perspective on the purpose of life.
“Our creator could be running a massive computer simulation,” Musk said, suggesting that human life could be similar to “somebody’s video game” or even an “alien Netflix series.”
Katie Miller responded by asking, “Are the ratings good?” “Yeah,” Musk answered immediately.
He then explained his thinking further. “If you apply Darwin to simulation theory, then only the most interesting simulations will continue,” Musk said. “Therefore, the most interesting outcome is most likely because it’s either that or annihilation. So, really, we have one goal. Keep it interesting.”
Musk’s evolving views on faith also appear to be connected to personal experiences and social issues. He has spoken openly about the emotional impact of his child Xavier’s gender transition. Musk has said this experience deeply affected him and changed how he views modern institutions, medicine, and culture.
Around the same period, Musk moved major companies, including X and SpaceX, out of California. He said the decision was partly driven by disagreements with state policies related to transgender minors and parental rights.
Musk has also encouraged his followers to attend church following major public tragedies and was seen attending memorial events in recent years. These actions have added to public discussion about his changing outlook on faith and tradition.
While Elon Musk has not formally joined any religion, his recent statements make it clear that he no longer considers himself an atheist. His belief that the universe came from a Creator shows a significant personal shift and has sparked debate worldwide.
