DIY Word Clock on single MAX7219 driven 8×8 Matrix

The clock’s construction is simplified and the clock’s face is printed by the help of a printer on a plain paper.

This time, I’ll demonstrate how to build an attractive and small Word Clock. In this kind of clock, time is shown in words instead of numbers, as on the standard clock.

Video Demonstration:

The design of such devices is often complicated in creating an appropriate box that has partitions for each LED and the face of the clock, which is to be designed using a suitable printer or laser cutter. In this instance, the design is reduced by using an 8×8 matrix driven through the MAX7219 chip.

The clock face is created using a Laser printer printed on an ordinary piece of paper. In addition, in place of this tiny matrix, you can put an additional one with 6 x 6 cm dimensions. I chose this matrix, where the driver board was more significant than the matrix, so I removed the driver piece of the board and put it aside.

This code was the creation by Marco Colli, and the curiosity is that he’s responsible for the development of all libraries required for this project. The code, along with the libraries, can be downloaded via GitHub: Click Here.

world clock using Arduino

As I’ve mentioned previously, it is straightforward to build, and you can make it within less than an hour without using a box.

It is composed of only two elements:

  • Arduino nano microcontroller
  • 8×8 matrix module that includes MAX7219 driver
  • DS3231 real-time clock module
  • one Button

I used the box in one of my earlier projects, and I also utilized the Button of the encoder with a rotating function.

After turning the switch, we can read the exact time in words form. It is important to note that tolerances, as in this instance, is 5 minutes of actual time. This is because of the limited amount of LEDs. In the sense that they are just letters, but that’s the cost of the simplicity of their construction. But, we have the option of reading out the time in large numbers precisely, and this can be accomplished with just a single click to the right button.
Instead of changing the clock time during the summer period, a long press on the switch will create an automatic offset of +1 hour when you display your current date and time. Summer Time offset is reset to zero with a subsequent long press.
To set the time:
Double click the switch
Click to move through the number of hours.
Click to stop the editing, and edit minutes
Click to continue the time
Double click to quit editing and then set the new time.
Then, the radio is placed inside a box comprised of PVC and then coated by a self-adhesive wall.
