China has introduced an unusual fire truck that quickly attracted attention due to its rare design and advanced functions. In particular, the vehicle, known as the Dual-Headed Fire Truck, has two fronts. As a result, it can move forward in either direction without turning around. The Dual-Headed Fire Truck first appeared in Nanjing, the capital of Jiangsu Province. Reports show that the Dual-Headed Fire Truck costs around 9 million yuan, about 1.43 million dollars. This price remains high due to advanced engineering and time-saving capability. Consequently, designers focused on improving emergency response efficiency in crowded cities.
Beyond convenience, the vehicle delivers strong performance. Notably, it can reach speeds of up to 120 miles per hour in either direction. As a result, this feature makes it highly responsive in critical situations. Furthermore, the truck also supports full firefighting operations. It carries a 4,000-liter water tank, equal to about 1,056 gallons. Additionally, it includes a 1,892-liter foam tank, equal to about 500 gallons, and stores essential equipment for fire emergencies.

On March 24, 1999, a transport truck carrying flour and margarine caught fire inside the Mont Blanc Tunnel, which runs under the Alps between France and Italy. After numerous investigations and safety reviews, experts looked for ways to prevent such tragedies in the future. One result led to the development of the two-way fire truck. German truck company MAN designed the vehicle. Italian company BAI built it.
Engineers created these trucks to handle emergencies in long tunnels. Normal fire trucks cannot turn around easily in such spaces. This design allows quick response in both directions. It improves rescue operations in critical tunnel incidents.
In China, the two-headed fire truck was not only used in Nanjing but also seen in Fuzhou, in Fujian Province as China Daily reported.. It was first used during the National Youth Games and later became part of the local fire department. Reports suggested that there were fewer than ten such fire trucks in all of Asia, making them very rare and special.
“Imagine the time we saved when we didn’t have to reverse or make awkward turns,” said a firefighter in Nanjing. “In many emergencies, a few seconds could make the difference between life and death.”
The fire truck was known as the MAN BAI Janus 4000 “Bifronte,” a name that reflected its two-faced design. Janus was a figure from Roman mythology who had two faces—one looking forward and the other looking back. The name was a perfect fit for a truck that could drive both forward and backward without stopping.
