Bangladesh is reportedly holding talks with Pakistan to buy JF-17 Thunder fighter jets as part of its plan to modernize its air force. According to defense sources, a 12-member evaluation committee has been formed in Dhaka to study the technical and financial sides of the deal. If this agreement is finalized, it could help the Bangladesh Air Force strengthen its air power with a cost-effective, advanced multirole combat aircraft.
The JF-17 Thunder is a modern fighter jet jointly developed by Pakistan and China. It is equipped with advanced radar systems, smart weaponry, and powerful engines. It can perform both air-to-air and air-to-ground missions, making it suitable for various combat situations. Bangladesh’s interest in the JF-17 shows its determination to expand its defense partnerships and reduce dependence on traditional suppliers.
Recently Chief of General Staff of the Bangladesh Armed Forces, visited the Pakistan Air Force headquarters in Islamabad. The visit was part of efforts to build stronger military relations between the two countries and to explore collaboration in defense technology and manufacturing. During the visit, discussions were held about enhancing military cooperation and exploring new areas for training and technology transfer.
Air Chief Marshal met with the Bangladeshi delegation and discussed new opportunities for cooperation. He said, “The Pakistan Air Force is ready to extend full cooperation to Bangladesh in enhancing interoperability and strengthening defense ties.” His statement reflected Pakistan’s wider goal of building stronger defense partnerships in South Asia and promoting collaboration in military technology.

The JF-17 Thunder has already gained global attention for being a cost-effective, reliable, and combat-proven aircraft. Several countries, including Myanmar and Nigeria, have already purchased it.
The latest version, the JF-17C (Block III), is equipped with an improved radar system, digital cockpit, advanced missile system, and better maneuverability. It is also capable of carrying multiple types of weapons, making it suitable for both air combat and ground attacks. For a country like Bangladesh, which wants to modernize its air fleet while keeping costs reasonable, the JF-17C offers a perfect balance between price and performance.
The addition of JF-17C jets would enhance the Bangladesh Air Force’s combat capabilities, providing a stronger defense against air and ground threats. The aircraft’s flexibility and ability to adapt to different mission requirements make it a smart choice for countries that want advanced technology without paying Western prices.
Experts say this deal could also help Bangladesh improve its self-reliance in defense procurement. By diversifying its suppliers, the country can reduce its dependency on one source and gain more freedom in military purchases.
For Pakistan, a successful deal with Bangladesh would further strengthen its defense export profile. It would show that Pakistan’s defense industry can compete with larger global players, especially in offering affordable yet powerful alternatives.
Reports suggest that Bangladesh plans to send an official team to Pakistan soon to evaluate the JF-17C variant. This team will review the aircraft’s performance, maintenance, radar system, and other features.
They will also discuss pricing, training, and possible technology transfer options. If the results are positive, both countries may sign a contract that includes joint training programs, exchange of defense experts, and long-term collaboration in defense manufacturing.
