Researchers at Harvard University’s Human Flourishing Program propose that extraterrestrial beings could be living among us, cleverly disguised as humans. This startling hypothesis has ignited a wave of curiosity and skepticism, reshaping the discourse around unidentified aerial phenomena (UAPs) and the existence of extraterrestrial life.
The study, led by Tim Lomas, Brendan Case, and Michael Paul Masters, introduces the “cryptoterrestrial hypothesis” (CTH). This theory posits that some UAPs might not be visitors from distant galaxies but rather beings that have been residing on Earth for millennia, hidden in plain sight. These cryptoterrestrials, according to the study, could be living underground, on the moon, or mingling with humans without revealing their true identities.
“The author became increasingly aware of the depth of evidence and theory that also tentatively supports another extraterrestrial explanation: the cryptoterrestrial hypothesis,” states the paper. This hypothesis challenges conventional views by suggesting that UAPs could be related to non-human intelligences (NHIs) concealed on Earth and its surroundings.

Forms of Cryptoterrestrials
The research outlines four potential forms of cryptoterrestrials:
- Cryptoterrestrials came to Earth from a different time period or planet, and concealed themselves in stealth
- A form of intelligent species evolved separately from humans on Earth and are hiding on our planet. The paper suggests these could be an ape-like descendant or descendants of “unknown, intelligent dinosaurs”
- A “remnant form” of ancient civilization exists on Earth, despite being largely destroyed long ago, possibly by a flood or other natural disaster
- The possibility of something likened to “earthbound angels” — creatures that are, perhaps, of a magical supernatural origin, like “fairies, elves, nymphs”
UFOs as Alien Transportation
The study also entertains the possibility that UFOs could serve as transportation for these alien beings visiting their Earth-based counterparts. This idea expands the conventional understanding of UFOs, suggesting they might not always be spacecraft from distant galaxies but vehicles used by cryptoterrestrials to traverse Earth.
“UFOs or UAPs could be spaceships visiting Earth-based alien friends,” the researchers propose, urging the scientific community to approach their findings with an open mind.
“Hypotheses for such phenomena tend to fall into two classes: a conventional terrestrial explanation (e.g., human-made technology), or an extraterrestrial explanation (i.e., advanced civilisations from elsewhere in the cosmos),” they said. “However, there is also a third minority class of hypothesis: an unconventional terrestrial explanation, outside the prevailing consensus view of the universe.”
Anticipating skepticism, the researchers acknowledge that their claims might be met with doubt. They stress the importance of considering these theories with “epistemic humility and openness.” The paper is yet to undergo peer review, which is crucial for validating their findings and encouraging broader acceptance within the scientific community.

“The principal weakness of CTH, particularly the more mystical aspects, is its utter strangeness,” the paper concedes. Despite this, the authors advocate for an expanded framework of inquiry that includes these unconventional possibilities.
The study arrives at a time when interest in UAPs is surging globally. Governments and scientific institutions are increasingly prioritizing research into these phenomena, often framing the issue as one of national and planetary security.
Last year, former U.S. intelligence officer David Grusch testified before Congress, alleging that the government has been concealing a program to retrieve and reverse-engineer UFOs. His claims, while denied by the Pentagon, have fueled public interest and concern about the nature and origin of UAPs.
NASA, too, has expressed its commitment to exploring the possibility of extraterrestrial life. Despite not finding concrete evidence of alien life, the agency continues to investigate UAPs as part of its mission to answer fundamental questions about our place in the universe.

The Harvard study’s bold assertions challenge us to rethink our understanding of extraterrestrial life and its potential interactions with Earth. The paper has yet to be peer-reviewed. If accepted, it will be published in the journal Philosophy and Cosmology.
